Bayer named the substance "heroin", most likely derived from the common
German word "
heroisch," (heroic), because the drug was originally designed to make a person "heroic" by allowing them to lose their addiction to alcohol.
[3]It was also developed as a non-addictive
morphine substitute that did not have its negative side-effects.
[4] Unbeknownst to Bayer, its new drug, heroin, would soon cause addiction worse than any drug ever previously known. The name "heroin" was and still is known as the name of the drug.
